The Eurofighter was developed as an air superiority fighter against the threat of the Warsaw Pact. After the end of the Cold War, it was adapted for its new role as a multi-purpose combat aircraft. Now the Eurofighter serves primarily as a fighter-bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. It was first put into actual use as the British Eurofighter Typhoon in March 2011 in Libya, where these aircraft successfully enforced the no-fly zone.

Furthermore, the Eurofighter is equipped with a single-barrel, gas-driven five-chamber revolver cannon (empty weight of 220 lbs./100 kg.), the 27mm x 145 mm caliber Mauser BK-27 on its right-wing base. It was developed in the late 1960s by the company Mauser and is now produced by Rheinmetall. With a range of 1 mile/1600 m. and a rate of fire of 1700 rounds per minute, it is employed for shorter distances. The muzzle velocity of the projectiles is over 3820 feet/1000 meters per second. Over 9 lb./4 kg. of projectile mass are fired in less than a second.
